Society
and Culture:
Cultures are what make countries
unique. Each country has different cultural activities and
cultural rituals. Culture is more than just material goods,
that is things the culture uses and produces. Culture is also
the beliefs and values of the people in that culture. Culture
also includes the way people think about and understand the
world and their own lives.
Human societies are often organized
according to their primary means of subsistence. As noted
in the section on "Evolution of societies", above,
social scientists identify hunter-gatherer societies, nomadic
pastoral societies, horticulturalist or simple farming societies,
and intensive agricultural societies, also called civilizations.
Some consider industrial and post-industrial societies to
be qualitatively different from traditional agricultural societies.
Some societies will bestow status
on an individual or group of people, when that individual
or group performs an admired or desired action. |

Cultures
of the world is the aggregate of regional variations in culture,
both by nation and ethnic group and more broadly, by larger
regional variations. Similarities in culture often occur in
geographically nearby peoples. Both summaries of each region's
major cultural characteristics as well as links to individual
national or group cultures can be found here. See also: list
of national cultures.
Large societies often have subcultures,
or groups of people with distinct sets of behavior and beliefs
that differentiate them from a larger culture of which they
are a part. The subculture may be distinctive because of the
age of its members, or by their race, ethnicity, class or
gender. The qualities that determine a subculture as distinct
may be aesthetic, religious, occupational, political, sexual
or a combination of these factors. |
